Type  Family Description  von Willebrand factor (vWF) is a multimeric adhesive protein that plays a key role in platelet function by mediating the initiation and progression of thrombus formation at sites of vascular injury []. Binding of vWF to platelet membrane glycoprotein GPIb-alpha () of the GPIb-IX-V complex supports the arrest of bleeding after tissue trauma. The rapid association of GP1b-alpha with vWF not only initiates platelet deposition at the sites of vascular injury but is essential for maintaining thrombus growth in blood flowing at high shear rates.
