Type  Domain Description  This DUF71 domain is found in at least two protein families with different functions. One is predicted to be diphthine-ammonia ligase (EC, Dph6. This enzyme catalyses the last ATP-dependent step in the synthesis of diphthamide, a modified histidine amino acid found in elongation factor 2. Dph6 orthologues are found in Archaea and Eucarya. The DUF71 domain appears to have originated in the Archaea/Eucarya ancestor and to have been subsequently horizontally transferred to Bacteria. Bacterial members with this domain have likely acquired a different function because the diphthamide modification is absent in Bacteria. Instead, some archaeal and bacterial proteins with the DUF71 domain may participate in vitamin B12 salvage [].
