Type  Family Description  There is no experimental data for members of this family. However, detailed sequence analysis shows their distant relationship to bacterial ferritins. They belong to the ferritin-like fold and ferritin-like domain superfamily according to SCOP.Ferritins constitute a broad superfamily of non-haem iron storage proteins[, ]. Ferritins and bacteroferritins have essentially the same architecture, assembling into a 24mer cluster to form a hollow, roughly spherical construction. This consists of a mineral core of hydrated ferric oxide, and a multi-subunit protein shell that encloses it and assures its solubility in an aqueous environment.
