Asparate-alanine anti-transporter (AspT) is encoded next to the gene for aspartate 4-decarboxylase (AspD), which converts asparate to alanine, releasing CO2. The exchange of Asp for Ala is electrogenic, so the AspD/AspT system confers a proton-motive force []. AspT may forms homo-oligomers as a functional unit. Its transmembrane domain 3 (TM3) can undergoes l-aspartate-induced conformational alterations []. The topology of AspT has been studied [, , ].
